In a significant move for Canada's forestry sector, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced a $500 million national initiative on February 25, 2026, in Tracyville, New Brunswick. This announcement forms part of a series of measures under Natural Resources Canada's forest sector transformation programs, designed to bolster innovation, diversification, and resilience in the face of ongoing U.S. trade pressures.

Key Measures Announced

  • Funding Programs: Eligible businesses and organizations are encouraged to apply for funding through several key programs:
    • Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT)
    • Green Construction Through Wood (GCWood)
    • Indigenous Forestry Initiative (IFI)
    • Global Forest Leadership Program (GloFor)

These initiatives aim to increase domestic wood demand through policies like "Buy Canadian" and "Build Canada Homes," expand the use of mass timber in construction, support Indigenous participation, enhance value-added manufacturing, and open new global markets.

Moreover, an additional $2.8 million has been earmarked for seven specific projects within New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. These projects focus on advancing mass timber usage, increasing Indigenous support, enhancing manufacturing capacity, and diversifying exports.

Context and Background

This announcement builds on Prime Minister Mark Carney's previous actions, such as the August 2025 measures for softwood lumber transformation and the protective measures for steel and lumber enacted in November 2025. The creation of the Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force in January 2026 further underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening this critical sector.

The forestry sector is vital to Canada's economy, employing nearly 200,000 individuals, including 11,000 Indigenous workers, and contributing over $20 billion to the nation's GDP. In the maritimes alone, the sector supports 19,000 jobs and adds $2 billion to the regional economy.

Minister Hodgson's Statement: “Canada’s forests are more than a resource. They are the foundation for good jobs, affordable housing, and sustainable economic growth. Today’s announcement ensures that the forest sector continues to serve as a pillar of national strength.”

This comprehensive announcement signals a robust step forward in supporting Canada's forestry industry, ensuring its resilience and adaptability as it faces challenges on the international stage.
