Canada Pledges $500 Million for Forestry Sector Amid Trade Tensions
Canada's Energy Minister announces a $500 million investment to support the forestry sector, addressing U.S. trade challenges and promoting innovation and diversification.

In a significant move to bolster Canada's forestry sector, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced a $500 million investment on February 25, 2026. This funding is aimed at supporting forest sector innovation and addressing recent trade challenges posed by the United States.
The initiative was revealed during a press conference in Tracyville, New Brunswick, with a strategic focus on job protection, company stabilization, and sector diversification. This funding is part of a larger effort that includes Prime Minister Mark Carney's measures from August 2025 and the Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force initiated in January 2026.
Key Funding Programs and Objectives
The hefty $500 million will facilitate various national Calls for Proposals under several established programs, such as:
- Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program
- Green Construction Through Wood (GCWood) program
- Indigenous Forestry Initiative (IFI)
- Global Forest Leadership Program (GloFor)
The programs are designed to enhance innovation in the forest industry, increase the use of domestic wood in construction, promote Indigenous participation, and develop new international markets.
Immediate Impact and Regional Support
In addition to the nationwide funding, $2.8 million has been allocated to support seven pioneering projects in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. These projects will focus on expanding mass timber usage, Indigenous and business collaborations, value-added manufacturing, and export diversification.
Economic Significance
The forestry sector is a vital component of Canada's economy, employing approximately 200,000 workers, including over 11,000 Indigenous people, and contributing over $20 billion to the national GDP. In the Maritimes alone, it supports 19,000 jobs, adding nearly $2 billion to the regional GDP.
Minister Hodgson emphasized the sector's importance, stating, "Canada's forests are more than a resource. They are the foundation for good jobs, affordable housing, and sustainable economic growth."
This announcement marks a pivotal step towards a resilient and future-ready Canadian forestry sector.
