1.2 Linguistic relativity and emotion vocabulary
The Sapir–Whorf debate has largely settled on a "weak" or "Whorf-light" position — language influences but does not determine cognition. The most relevant contemporary node for this paper is Lisa Feldman Barrett's Theory of Constructed Emotion and the construct of emotional granularity: the capacity to discriminate fine-grained emotion states using emotion words (e.g., "disappointed / betrayed / agitated / disrespected" rather than the global "bad"). Barrett's strong constructionist version — that emotion concepts (acquired through language and culture) are partly constitutive of emotion experience — is contested but increasingly mainstream. A useful counterweight to cite for balance: a 2025 semiotic/linguistic critique in Linguistic Frontiers (drawing on Jakob and Thure von Uexküll's Umwelt theory) argues that Barrett's granularity claims risk reviving discredited Bernstein/Labov-style "deficit" theories of vocabulary and reduce emotion to lexical inventory. The paper can navigate this responsibly by adopting a moderate position: emotion vocabulary does not create affect ex nihilo, but it scaffolds the regulation of pre-existing affect — exactly what an extended-mind / Vygotskian framing predicts. Evan Thompson and Andy Clark differ on whether the mind is extended (Clark) or enacted (Thompson) — Thompson rejects parts of Clark's extended-mind program because, on enactivism, the organism brings forth its world rather than incorporating chunks of it. The paper can sidestep that dispute by noting that both frameworks insist cognition cannot be located within the skull, and that the chemical media of the paper's developmental cascade either extend (Clark) or re-configure the coupling between organism and world (Thompson) — and produce the same outcome either way.
1.6 Has anyone explicitly connected McLuhan to Lieberman, or McLuhan to Vygotsky?
Based on this search pass: no published work explicitly bridges McLuhan's medium-of-media theory of language to either Lieberman's affect-labeling neuroscience or Barkley/Vygotsky inner-speech theory. Wolf is sometimes compared to McLuhan in blurbs (e.g., the back-cover comparison to "this generation's The Medium is the Message"), but that is a marketing analogy, not a theoretical bridge.
