Deep Research Pass: "The Medium Becomes the Ground"

Unmade Bridges Between McLuhan, Neuroscience, and the Theory of Compounding Substance Trajectories

Evan Thompson and Andy Clark differ on whether the mind is extended (Clark) or enacted (Thompson) — Thompson rejects parts of Clark's extended-mind program because, on enactivism, the organism brings forth its world rather than incorporating chunks of it. The paper can sidestep that dispute by noting that both frameworks insist cognition cannot be located within the skull, and that the chemical media of the paper's developmental cascade either extend (Clark) or re-configure the coupling between organism and world (Thompson) — and produce the same outcome either way.

1.6 Has anyone explicitly connected McLuhan to Lieberman, or McLuhan to Vygotsky?

Based on this search pass: no published work explicitly bridges McLuhan's medium-of-media theory of language to either Lieberman's affect-labeling neuroscience or Barkley/Vygotsky inner-speech theory. Wolf is sometimes compared to McLuhan in blurbs (e.g., the back-cover comparison to "this generation's The Medium is the Message"), but that is a marketing analogy, not a theoretical bridge. The closest existing work is Robert K. Logan's The Extended Mind: The Emergence of Language, the Human Mind and Culture (2007), a McLuhan collaborator's effort that explicitly bridges McLuhan and Clark but does not engage affect labeling or Barkley's ADHD model. Frank Zingrone (The Media Symplex, 2001) and Eric McLuhan's Laws of Media (1988) discuss language as medium but predate the relevant neuroscience.

Thread 2 — Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, and the Reversal of Autoamputation

McLuhan's tetrad (Laws of Media, 1988, with Eric McLuhan) asks four questions of any medium: What does it (1) enhance, (2) obsolesce, (3) retrieve from earlier, (4) reverse into when pushed to its limit? 2.3 Neurofeedback (EEG) for ADHD — a more cautious picture

The literature here has converged on a sobering consensus:

  • Westwood et al., JAMA Psychiatry 82(2): 118–129, February 2025 — the largest and most rigorous systematic review/meta-analysis to date (38 RCTs, n=2,472, ages 5–40). When restricted to probably-blinded outcome measures, neurofeedback showed no significant benefit on total ADHD symptoms (SMD 0.04). 2.4 Reafference (von Holst & Mittelstaedt, 1950)

Von Holst & Mittelstaedt's Das Reafferenzprinzip (Naturwissenschaften 37, 1950) introduced the distinction between exafference (sensory input from external causes) and reafference (sensory input caused by the organism's own actions, predicted via efference copy). The principle: motor commands send a copy ("efference copy" / "corollary discharge") to sensory areas, which subtract predicted reafference from incoming signals, so the brain perceives a stable world during self-motion.

This is the historical root of contemporary predictive processing (Friston, Clark, Hohwy) and active inference frameworks, in which the brain is a prediction machine that minimizes free energy by updating internal models or by acting to bring sensory input in line with prediction.

The connection to biofeedback is exact and, to my knowledge, has not been explicitly drawn through McLuhan: biofeedback is engineered reafference for an interoceptive channel that ordinarily lacks high-resolution efference copy. It externalizes a physiological signal (HRV, EEG, EMG, skin conductance) into a perceivable, learnable loop — restoring the predictive-coding cycle for a system the conscious organism could not previously perceive itself controlling. The paper can defensibly originate this framing: biofeedback = prosthetic reafference = engineered re-extension of the amputated interoceptive medium. Thread 3 — Unmade Bridges: McLuhan Insights Subsequently Confirmed by Neuroscience

3.1 Linear/sequential print vs. simultaneous/holistic electronic cognition

Wolf's central claim is that habitual digital reading produces a shift toward skimming, "word-spotting," and cognitive impatience that erodes deep-reading circuitry — exactly McLuhan's "post-literate" shift, now described in neural terms. Wolf herself rarely cites McLuhan; her work is presented as fresh empirical neuroscience even though it confirms his thesis.

  • N. Katherine Hayles, "Hyper and Deep Attention: The Generational Divide in Cognitive Modes" (Profession, 2007): explicit theoretical articulation of a cognitive-style shift, formally citing McLuhan and Carr.

The paper's framing appears genuinely original within the extended-mind literature.

4.3 Enactivism and addiction

  • Hanna Pickard's philosophical work on addiction as a choice responsive to reasons sits adjacent to enactivism, though not labeled as such.
  • The most explicit enactivist treatment is Zoey Lavallee and Anke Snoek, in work on agency in addiction (Snoek's papers in Philosophy, Psychiatry & Psychology and AJOB Neuroscience) — Snoek explicitly argues for an embodied/enactive understanding of addictive agency.

The identity-dissolution symptoms the paper discusses (loss of authentic self-state, depersonalization, alexithymia, anhedonia, the sense of being a "shell" of oneself in late-stage addiction) are predicted by Metzinger's framework as the consequence of repeated chemical rewriting of the PSM: the self-model becomes dependent on exogenous chemical "writes" to instantiate states it can no longer endogenously produce.   • Genuinely original: the developmental cascade claim — that nicotine, cannabis, and alcohol are recruited in a specific sequence because each addresses a distinct regulatory deficit (arousal, affect, approach) left unfilled by the underdeveloped inner-speech scaffold in ADHD, and that this cascade is empirically predictable from the extended-mind account of which regulatory vacancies remain when inner speech is delayed.

The deepest unmade bridge — the one most worth foregrounding — is the identity between McLuhan's extensions-of-man / autoamputation logic and the inner-speech / affect-labeling regulatory architecture that ADHD developmentally disrupts.
